With extreme weather conditions causing irregular planting dates and limited time for critical fieldwork, this year’s growing season challenged weed control efforts and required additional flexibility from corn and soybean growers across the country.
Our Enlist® field specialist team worked with growers throughout the year to ensure continued success with the Enlist® weed control system. Strong customer partnerships and frequent conversations allowed the team to see what was working well and to identify areas of improvement for next year.
Here are five key weed control takeaways from our Enlist field specialist team:
Always use full, labeled herbicide rates to control weeds. With the moisture this summer, many weeds were growing 1 to 1.5 inches per day. Using a powerful weed control program approach that includes full rates of herbicides is key to keeping fields clean and maximizing yield.
Once you get behind on weed control, you never catch up, says field specialist Andy Carriger. Get more in-season weed control recommendations from Carriger.
Scout, scout, scout. Weed escapes can happen for many reasons, and if weeds such as Palmer amaranth or waterhemp are left to flourish, it can severely diminish yield.
Although residual herbicides are a critical component in a successful weed control program, the residual activity doesn’t last forever, says field specialist Mark Mongin. “Scouting can help you get ahead of weed escapes and better anticipate the all-important postemergence application.”

Prioritize herbicide coverage. In a season of rapid weed growth, it’s more important than ever to ensure adequate herbicide coverage. You can make herbicide applications more successful by using qualified nozzles at the optimum settings.
“Make sure you’re using approved tank-mix products along with qualified nozzles, and that your equipment is set up properly prior to the application,” field specialist Brett Gordon says. Hear more about why herbicide coverage is key in this report.
Overcome weather delays with a flexible herbicide program. Irregular planting dates and delayed fieldwork require a flexible herbicide program.
“Weather patterns have been tough to manage this year. Some fields got planted early, and then rain came, and growers couldn’t get back out there,” field specialist Tony Goede says. The good news is that growers who planted Enlist E3® soybeans could still make applications well into the growing season.
“There isn’t a calendar cutoff for Enlist One herbicide. This really came into play this year, because a lot of fields got flooded early,” Goede says.

Prioritize application excellence. While the weather is not within your control, there are always measures you can take to ensure a more successful herbicide application. Adjuvant selection, application timing and sprayer setup are all factors to consider.
“95 to 99 percent of the time, [herbicide efficacy] comes down to things within our control,” says field specialist Scott Jungman. Hear more from Jungman in this report.
