Dollar spot is a stubborn, unsightly turf disease. Learn how to identify and control dollar spot before it takes over.

Dollar spot is everything you don’t want in a turf disease. It thrives in a wide range of temperatures (60 to 90 degrees) and throughout much of the year (typically May through October). It loves warm days, cool nights and high humidity. It shows at least some level of resistance to many of the most commonly used fungicides, and it has a special affection for nitrogen-starved turf.

How to Spot Dollar Spot

Dollar spot gets its name from the roughly silver dollar-sized whitish spots it leaves on highly manicured lawns and turf. Size of the spots can vary, however, depending on the height of the turf; typically, the lower the turf, the smaller the spots. Individual small spots can blend to form larger patches. Closer examination may reveal whitish fungal growth; individual blades of grass may show characteristic lesions with brown or red margins.

How to Stop Dollar Spot

Cultural controls can help slow or prevent the spread of dollar spot. Start by choosing turf cultivars that are less susceptible to dollar spot infection. Water as often as required to avoid moisture stress; if possible, implement mechanical controls such as rolling to remove dew or guttational fluid. Ensure adequate nitrogen levels; frequent, light nitrogen applications are best for reducing disease severity and promoting recovery.

For chemical control, alternate treatments using fungicides with different active ingredients and modes of action. FloxcorTM fungicide, for example, offers fast uptake and movement, and gives control of over 26 turf diseases including dollar spot, brown spot, fairy ring and more. Eagle® 20EW specialty fungicide makes a good tank-mix or rotational partner. Both Floxcor fungicide and Eagle specialty fungicide also offer control of ornamental diseases such as powdery mildew.

Floxcor is not for sale or use in Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York. Other state restrictions on the sale and use of Floxcor apply. State restrictions on the sale and use of Eagle® 20EW apply. Consult the label before purchase or use for full details. Always read and follow label directions.
