Industries and Use Sites

At Corteva Agriscience™ we offer prescription control that takes into account your individual needs. Take a closer look at the industries we serve and how our herbicides can help.

Utility

text

Schools, hospitals and corporations trust their respective utility companies to prevent power outages. That’s why utility vegetation managers are critical in preventing service interruptions and being ready to restore power quickly if outages occur.

Trees and brush growing into power lines can cause electrical power outages and make utility line maintenance much more difficult and dangerous. In addition, areas around utility substations require a vegetation-free zone to prevent fire hazards and ensure the transfer of electricity. By keeping utility lines clear of overgrown vegetation by using herbicides, line maintenance can be easily conducted while providing reliable power to customers.

Roadside

text

Weeds and other vegetation like to make their home along roadsides. There are a number of reasons to control this roadside vegetation: ensuring motorist safety; maintaining line of sight; allowing for proper drainage of precipitation to prevent road surface degradation; and mitigating the spread of invasive species onto adjacent properties.

It is essential that vegetation does not block traffic signs or roadside markers. Because vegetation can obstruct driver vision at intersections or block the line of sight around curves, it must be treated and controlled — and roadside herbicides play a vital role. It is especially important that roadside delineators and traffic signs can be seen in poor conditions to ensure motorist safety. Excessive vegetation also can damage roadbeds by obstructing drainage off the surface, leading to potholes, flooding and other hazards.

Invasive Species

text

Invasive and noxious plants threaten to create a monoculture — where one plant dominates an area — choking out native plant species. These monocultures can change wildlife habitats so animals can no longer utilize the area. These aggressive competitors threaten native ecosystems by adapting to a wide range of environmental conditions and spreading until they become the dominant species.

Invasive species management tactics must consider the site surroundings and desirable vegetation. Selective herbicides control invasive and noxious species while serving as a catalyst to restore native ecosystems. While mechanical methods can be used to manage certain invasive trees, these techniques often cause more damage to an area than herbicides and can open areas to new invasion of other invasive and noxious plants.

Forestry

text

Foresters control vegetation to improve forest health and maximize the amount of timber they can harvest, providing increased profitability and sustainability of the land. Whether used in site prep or release treatments, herbicides also help decrease the amount of time it takes for a tree to reach harvestable sizes.

Whether you are managing brush and vine outbreaks along your access road or trying to increase wildlife populations, forestry herbicides from Corteva Agriscience can help. By controlling vegetative competition with forestry herbicides, you ensure the benefits by other cultural treatments, including genetic improvement and fertilization, are fully captured. Whether you’re a new private landowner or a veteran forester, Corteva Agriscience has the solutions and services to help your timber stand reach its potential.

Railroad

text

Safety and usability are essential for railroads. Heavy equipment moves at high speeds along the rails, and unchecked weeds and brush can reduce train traction during starts and stops. Weeds in the track ballast hold water around railroad ties, which causes them to rot, increasing chances for derailment accidents. Sparks from the rails also can ignite weeds and brush growing too close to the tracks, which can create a fire hazard for neighboring residents.

Brush that obstructs motorists’ views at railroad crossings is especially dangerous. Controlling it can help avert car/train accidents. Corteva Agriscience has the railroad vegetation management herbicides and services to help any railroad program battle vegetation.

Commitment From Corteva Agriscience™

Tips and Training

When preparing for a herbicide application, it’s important to take the proper steps to ensure herbicides are handled carefully and used correctly. Doing so maximizes the return on investment of every herbicide application and minimizes the potential for off-target issues.

Safety & Equipment

Man spraying brush with a backpack sprayer

Professional applicators know the importance of safety procedures and protective equipment when handling herbicides. Although the label is the law, accidents do happen, and each applicator needs to minimize his or her chance for exposure. Following label directions is the first place to start.

Application Technique

Applicators have a number of techniques available to them when applying herbicides. It’s important to first select the treatment method best suited to the vegetation and use site you intend to treat, as well as the herbicide(s) you intend to use.

Communication
