As row rice acres trend up, especially in the bootheel of Missouri, rice producers are evaluating which herbicide and insecticide options best fit this unconventional production system.
For growers in need of billbug (snout beetle) control in rice, an option is now available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a supplemental FIFRA 2(ee) label allowing DuPont™ Dermacor® X-100 rice seed treatment to be used for billbug control.
Dermacor X-100 provides excellent control of insects that can damage tillers and reduce yield, including billbug, stemborers and rice water weevil.
For early season weed control in row rice, we recommend using 20 ounces per acre of RebelEX® herbicide beginning when rice is at the two- to three-leaf stage. This product gives you two active modes of action against barnyardgrass and offers control of problem weeds, including sprangletop, jointvetch, rice flatsedge and hemp sesbania.
"Without a water-weed barrier, RebelEX is able to provide two to three weeks of residual activity against many of our major weed pests in row rice production systems". — Jody Vancil-Cole
Loyant® herbicide is another popular product for our row rice acres, especially in areas with heavy Palmer amaranth and sedge pressure. Loyant at the 16-ounce-per-acre rate provides excellent control of Palmer amaranth (pigweed) and several sedges, including umbrella sedge, rice flatsedge and the newly discovered white margin sedge.
